From Poplar, Wisconsin, Dick Bong was the top American fighter ace in the Pacific Theater of Operations (PTO). He flew 200 missions and brought down 40 Japanese planes. For this he was awarded America’s highest honor, The Congressional Medal of Honor, but on August 6, 1945 in Burbank, California, Dick Bong lost his life testing America’s newest jet fighter the P-80.
