During his tour with the 325th Captain Barkey flew 53 combat missions in both the P-47 and the P-51 logging 200 hours and 10 minutes of combat flying earning the DFC, Air Medal, with 12 Oak Leaf clusters, three battle stars and a Presidential Unit Citation. Barkey shot down 5 Bf109s and was credited with a probable on a Macchi 202. Bob became a flight leader during his tour, flew 45 missions in his P-47 “Thunderbolt Lad” named after his young son and 8 missions in his P-51B “Dorothy II” named after wife. Upon completion of tour he was rotated back to the States and sent Hillsgrove, R.I., to become an instructor.
