Heinz Wolfgang Schnaufer
(121 victories)

Schnaufer was born on 16 February 1922, in Calw near Stuttgart. Heinz Schnaufer entered the Luftwaffe as a trainee officer-pilot in November 1939, and completed his flying training in 1941. He later posted to the Heavy Fighter School (Zerstorerschule) at Wunstorf where he met Fritz Rumpelhardt, who became his Funker (radio/radar operater) and flew with him, with a break in 1943, until the end of the war. Schnaufer and Rumpelhardt agreed to volunteer to fly with the newly-formed Nachtjagd, the night-fighter arm of the Luftwaffe. In November 1941, on completion of their flying training, they were posted II./NJG 1 at Stade, near Hamburg, later transferring with the same unit to Saint-Trond, Belgium. Throughout his career Schnaufer only flew the Bf110 operationally, despite subsequently commanding a Geschwader equipped with the JU 88. His career as a night-fighter began in the spring of 1942, scoring his first victory on 2 June 1942, flying with II.NJG 1. His most successful day was on 21 February 1945 when nine Lancasters fell to the 20mm and 30mm shells of his Messerschmitt Bf110G-4d/R3 night fighter. His gunner Wilhelm Gänsler and radio/radar operator Fritz Rumpelhardt shared in most of his kills and were both awarded the Ritterkreuz (Knights Cross). Known to the British as the "Night Ghost of Saint-Trond", Schnaufer ended the war in command of NJG 4 with 121 victories and 164 combat missions. He was taken prisoner by the British in May 1945 at Eggebek in Schleswig-Holstein, but was released later that year and returned to Calw, where he took over the reins of the family wine business, his father having died during the war. After surviving WWII, Major Heinz-Wolfgang Schnaufer was killed in automobile accident while on a business trip to France in 1950.
