By wars end Helmut had flown 33 different types of aircraft. This included the first jets (ME-262). Helmut walked away from five crashes, bailed out of one burning aircraft, after losing a fight with a B-17, fought in the North African desert war under Rommel. Was awarded the Iron Cross, and came through WWII without ever suffering a scratch.
