Product Description

Frame Size 21" x 23" ----- Ink cut-signature on a off color white paper autographed by: General James H. Doolittle. Comes with a COE.

In 1932, Jimmy Doolittle won the Thompson Trophy race (part of the Cleveland National Air Races), averaging 252.7 mph. The aircraft he flew was the Gee Bee (Granville Brothers) Model R-1, one of the infamous trio of Gee Bee Super Sportster racers - along with the Models R-2 and Z.

After the race, Doolittle quit air racing - and became a staunch opponent of it. The victory had been a famous one, but he believed that it could have easily cost him his life.

In total, Granville Brothers Aircraft made thirteen Sportster planes. All but one crashed, killing six pilots - including Zantford Granville. In addition, another aircraft was built from the wreckage of the R-1 and R-2 Sportsters - this crashed twice, the second time killing the pilot. The company became bankrupt in 1934.

The debates rage on - were the aircraft too advanced for their time? Did the designers know what they were doing? Either way, the aircraft remain icons of the “Golden Age” of air racing, and aviation in general
